Saughton Sounders: One Club – Now Three Teams

Sean Burt today exclusively revealed the background to the LEAFA Club bringing a third team (Saturday) into their excellent set-up, writes Tom Scott.

He said: “We explored the option of adding a Saturday team in the same way we added our Sunday Morning side last season.”

“Like the Mornings, we needed someone who had a core group of players, and this is what James (Lothian) and David (Oag) had at Sporting Saughton..”

“We knew they had a very good set of players from playing against them pre-season. I know James after working with him and I approached him about the possibility of coming under our branding.”

“After much discussion, thankfully he agreed.”

I asked Sean how does the new team move forward?

He told me: “As always, our sides are recognisable with our strips and training wear and they will be exactly the same.”

“James and David have assembled a great squad, and our afternoon side experienced this first hand in pre-season.”

“I have no doubt Sounders Saturdays will be ones to watch this season.”

Meanwhile, James Lothian interrupted a busy daily schedule to reveal his involvement and said: “Just before lockdown we took over at Sporting Sounders.”

“I was a player there for a few months before the Manager decided to leave – meaning the team had no one in charge.”

“I had helped out at previous Clubs. Dave had managed before, so we asked him to come in and manage us.”

“Dave has managed at Edinburgh Thistle Sundays, Lauriston Thistle Sundays and Civil Service Strollers Sundays.”

We wish all three teams every success moving forward.

FN Teamwear Provide Summer Tournament Sponsorship

Edinburgh-based FN Teamwear are set to sponsor the 48-team Summer Tournament organised by Saughton Sounders, writes Tom Scott.

Sean Burt confirmed their involvement – and kindly provided Scottish Amateur Football News with the Cup graphic – as he looks forward to creating a live “draw.”

The ballot will contain some huge names in Amateur Football plus Under-20 Clubs in the form of Edinburgh United and Preston Athletic, who will relish and reap the benefit of going up against more experienced campaigners.

Hopefully restrictions are eased sufficiently to allow followers of Scottish Amateur Football to visit different venues, and watch the action unfolding.

Three Awards Up- For -Grabs At Saughton Tournament

Organiser Sean Burt has revealed three different category trophies will be at stake for competing clubs when the Saughton Sounders FC Tournament kicks-off in May, writes Tom Scott.

A total of 48 Clubs will be involved – an amazing response – and here is an update on my previous articles.

Sounders Manager Sean said “We will have a live draw taking place in April, and it will broken down into 8 groups of 6, with the top two playing for the Championship Trophy.”

“Middle two will play for the Conference Trophy, and the bottom seeds are playing for the League Trophy.”

Saughton Tournament: New Midweek Deadline

Response to the proposed Saughton Sounders AFC Tournament has literally gone through the roof in terms of Club interest according to Manager Sean Burt, writes Tom Scott.

As I revealed on Monday, official League permission has been granted to run the event this summer, and if the Scottish Government plans remain intact, we will see Clubs taking to the park and playing football again on 22nd May.

Hopefully, that list can be finalised by next Wednesday.

LEAFA Approve Innovative Saughton Tourney Idea

Sean Burt has revealed the Summer Tournament idea being put forward by Saughton Sounders FC has been given League approval, writes Tom Scott.

The LEAFA Club, who run Sunday Morning and Afternoon teams, have been inundated with approaches since announcing the idea last midweek.

I am delighted Sean gave me some of his time to answer the following questions.

Purpose of the Tournament?

“To allow teams to get playing ASAP and throughout all summer, which will be outlined when the format is announced.”

“However, all teams involved will compete through the summer.”

What’s happened so far?

“Between 20-25 teams have committed to the tournament, including Under-20 East of Scotland League sides amongst a mixture of Saturday and Sunday teams.”

“The League has given approval for the tournament to go ahead.”

What’s going to happen next?

“A format has now been drafted up and a couple of talks with Sponsors are to be held before a full confirmation of teams is confirmed.”

“A live group stage draw to take place at the end of April.”

Saughton Gauge Interest For Summer Tourney

Saughton Sounders FC boss Sean Burt is optimistic that initial interest already shown this week will help plans to run a summer tournament, writes Tom Scott.

He told me “Following the Social Media announcement, loads of teams have messaged us.”

“We are going to try and run the tournament with a trophy if enough teams are interested.”

Saughton, founded in 2019, won promotion in their first season, and have added a second LEAFA team – Managed by Raymond Singleton – playing Sunday Morning and Afternoon.
