SAFN Spotlight – Maryhill Milan AFC (Two Promotions And Cup Final Wins)

Considering Manager Jamie Butler only founded them in 2017 and football was brought to a standstill last March, Maryhill Milan must be pleased with their success percentage of two consecutive promotions plus back-to-back Cup Final victories, writes Tom Scott.

In their first GDSFC season – within Division 3 – the squad won promotion, and also lifted the Challenge Cup Final at Petershill Park, Springburn.

Paul Butler, son of the happy Manager, scored twice alongside a stunning free-kick from John Matchet.

Fast-forward a year later, and another promotion plus more silverware!

Goals from Paul Butler (2) and Gary Godfrey secured the GDSFC Vase Cup at Benburb Juniors’ New Tinto Park, Govan.

Maryhill Milan AFC – Promotions And Double Cup Success

Removing the 2019-2020 season which was cut short by the pandemic, and you have to admire the impact Maryhill Milan have made on Amateur Football – plus they clearly love to celebrate success, writes Tom Scott.

Founded under difficult circumstances by Manager Jamie Butler in 2017 – a heart-warming story I covered here on Sunday – the team from North Glasgow have won successive promotions out from the bottom of Division 3 to sit proudly in the Only Sport- backed Championship.

The Glasgow Sunday League team captured silverware in their first season, when two goals from Paul Butler, son of the manager, plus a stunning John Matchet free kick helped defeat Rosehall 3-1in the Challenge Cup Final at Petershill Park, Springburn.

One of the celebration photographs show the emotions enjoyed by Jamie Butler and his loyal captain, Anton Dakhil.

Fast-forward 12 months – into a second season – and the squad won promotion again, plus the happy squad sweep aside BSC 3-0 in the GDSFC Vase Cup at New Tinto Park, Govan (home of Benburb FC).

Paul Butler sent Milan into a 2-0 lead,. and Gary Godfrey added their third goal.

Hardly surprisingly, with his goalscoring prowess, Paul has since signed for Glasgow Perthshire in the new West of Scotland League structure, but family football loyalty never leaves you!

Boss Jamie said: “He is still at my side for every game.”

Maryhill Milan, sponsored by RM Plumbing and Gas Services, are built on the defining motto of “More Than A Club.”

Jamie added “Captain Anton Dakhil has been with me from Day One.”

“He has helped with everything I have done to date. The team is very close and we have built up a good relationship with each other.”

“It is also a very family organised team.”

“I couldn’t ask for any more from them all. I owe them a lot for what they have given me over the years.”

Maryhill Milan FC – More Than A Club

Manager Jamie Butler mentioned his club’s motto in this Interview, and their values towards life in general was shown again over the festive period when they raised £1070 running individual Half Marathons aimed at Radio Clyde’s Cash for Kids Appeal, writes Tom Scott.

On behalf of Scottish Amateur Football News, I wanted to find out the background and formation of the North Glasgow-based Club.

Jamie revealed: “I started the team back in 2017, mainly this was for boys in recovery. However, after struggling to get the numbers week after week, I decided to open it up to anyone, which in turn, turned out even better. I was getting players in who just came to play football, but realised what we were doing with our lives and gave them a platform to open up to the guys in the changing room. Our purpose of a team is to accept anyone.”

“To people that are isolated or have addiction issues, our doors will always be open. I also have guys that have no issues at all, but they know that some of the boys they share the changing room with do, and they respect that. We recently organised the run, Cash For Kids, where we ran Half Marathons.”

“Some walked even further. We manged to raise £1070 in the space of two weeks, and the boys all got their runs in. It is good to help other people, and this is what this club has always stood for.”

“We have a wee motto “MORE THAN A CLUB!” is what we say. Due to the values of the team. I have my Captain Anton Dakhil, who has been by my side from Day One. He has helped me with everything we have done to date.”

“The team is very close. We have built up good relationships with each other. It is also a very family organised team. With my Son and Son in Law, they been there from Day One also. We have had great support from our families. My wife has helped out in the back ground. Anton’s partner has done the same.”

“In fact, most the boys in the team have had their partners involved helping one way or another. It has been tough during the lockdown not getting about the boys, and not getting onto that park every Sunday, it is what most of us live for . We are passionate about the team. It has helped so many people, and is a shame to see it not serving that purpose at the moment.”

“While we are in this position, I will be looking at more ways to support the Community by doing Charity Events, which also keeps the boys on their toes. I know some may be reading this and saying “What has he got planned for us now? but to be honest in my eyes, I have the best boys in Amateur Football playing for this club. I have boys that just want to help others – boys that give me 100% on the field and off it.”

“I still have a lot of boys in the team that have been there from the start, and also signed a handful of great boys just before the lockdown.”

“I couldn’t ask for any more from them all and I owe them a lot for what they have given me over the years.”

**Maryhill Milan have worked their way through the GDSFC from the bottom Division to the Premiership, and also won the Challenge Cup Final and the Vase Cup Final.

Milan Half-Marathon Reaches Four-Figures

Maryhill Milan Management and Players have gone way beyond expectations and raised over £1000 from their Half Marathon. Originally, Manager Jamie Butler believed £100 would be possible by way of supporting the yearly Radio Clyde’s Cash for Kids Appeal.

I understand the Half-Marathon programme is not yet finished, but there can be no doubt everyone involved – either physically, donating or supporting the GDSFC Premiership club – deserve to be commended.

Maryhill Milan were founded in 2017, and have gone from strength to strength.

The journey, starting off in Division 3, has taken them into the sponsored Only Sport-sponsored top-flight – collecting the Challenge Cup (2017-2018) and GDSFC Vase Cup the following season.

SAFN Writer Tom Scott takes his Saturday look at some snippets around the country.

Arbroath High School FPS AFC have bought a brick, which is now on display, as part of the fund-raising venture organised by Arbroath FC Supporters Wall.

Glasgow Wellington are producing a limited number of brilliantly designed shirts, and money raised will go to raise funds for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, which has really suffered during Covid-19. Great idea by The Dukes! I understand the shirts will be available on the 26th December.

Talking of raising money, what about the superb effort from Maryhill Milan Management, Players and Friends for the Radio Clyde’s Cash For Kids Appeal.

The guys will out this weekend for a Half-Marathon. They were hoping to raise around £100, but by the middle of Friday afternoon the pot stood at around £620! Absolutely phenomenal.

Eastwood Parkmount have added Hamberley Care to their list of Sponsors.
