Can Doune Boss Ward Off Castle Rivals?

George Ward and his backroom staff are just hours away from making their official debut at Doune Castle, writes Tom Scott.

From this afternoon (June 12) until late July, Castle join seven other well-known clubs – including organisers Cambusbarron Rovers – trying to win the Stirling Amateur Summer League.

The list is impressive.

Riverside, Beechwood Albion, Milton, Braehead, Dunblane Soccer Academy and Dunipace AFC.

Craig Tully and Crawford Bell, who formed previous Doune Castle Management, made an outstanding contribution over a two-year period.

Joining George Wood, who has previously been in charge at Callander and Steins, are Kenny Ferguson, Sam McCue and Bob Angus

Everyone has been impressed with their work since stelling in as they attempt to maintain the Doune Castle tradition and success at Moray Park.

NOTE: Braehead FC v Dunblane S.C. is off today as the latter have a knock-out fixture against Dumbarton Academy FP AFC in the William Turner Challenge Cup.

The initial 4- Match Day fixtures have been released. He said “All the teams have now completed their mini pre-season preparations, and are looking forward both to taking part and renewing old acquaintances.”

“For most of the sides, this will be their first taste of competitive action in almost one full calendar year.”

“Taking part will stand all the participants well as they look forward to the real business of the 2021-2022 Season.”

“Dunblane Soccer Club won’t take part in the tournament’s first match day this Saturday, 12th June. Dunblane have reached the Semi- Final of the Caledonian League William Turner Challenge Cup, and will play Dumbarton Academy FP away.”

“The Stirling teams wish them well on their quest to reach the Final.”

“I’ll send the results to you after each round of results.”

Once again, on behalf of Scottish Amateur News, I thank Ian for his help and time giving us the information.

Doune Castle Thank Sponsors

Club Official Ian Sommerville has made contact with myself to highlight the huge support sponsors provide to Doune Castle, writes Tom Scott.

Like so many amateur clubs across the length and breadth of the country, Doune Castle recently returned to contact-training. All of last year’s squad have re-signed for next season.

Behind the scenes, the Doune Committee has been overwhelmed by the continued support from their existing sponsors. All of them have committed to back the team in the season ahead, despite the challenging business climate created by the pandemic.

Key Facilities Management, based only yards from the team’s Moray Park home, will continue as the club’s Main Sponsor. The Key FM logo will feature on the team’s striking tangerine Home kit.

Emma Drewery Optometrist of Bridge of Allan and Norman Salmoni Opticians of Perth will continue to back the club.

The Castle is also indebted to local building company, Panoply Timber Frame, who have generously carried out upgrade work on the Moray Park Pavilion during the long break from playing.

When Scottish Government restrictions permit, the Castle squad look forward again to enjoying the fare offered by hospitality sponsor, The Red Lion Inn.

On behalf of everyone at Doune Castle, Willie Docherty commented:

‘We are so grateful all our sponsors have committed to continuing their support of the club in the season ahead. Their generosity will undoubtedly help us meet a number of our key running costs. Without that support it would be impossible to keep the club going.’

Willie revealed Doune hope to announce a new sponsor very shortly. He also encouraged any business interested in offering further help to get in touch.

Many thanks to Ian for supplying the information and also all the logos.

New Manager And Coaching Staff Confirmed At Doune Castle

Doune Castle Official Ian Somerville has been in contact with me to give details of the Club’s new Manager and his Coaching team, writes Tom Scott.

He said: “George Ward has now confirmed his coaching team of Kenny Ferguson, Sam McCue and Bob Angus, all of whom have worked with him in the past.”

“The New Management Team has overseen our return to training as we prepare for the Stirling Invitational Summer League being organised by our fellow Caledonian side and near neighbours, Cambusbarron Rovers.”

“After such a long lay-off, and with the club badly affected by the Government travel restrictions, the Club opted to use this tournament as our main preparation for the new season in August.”

Prior to the resumption of training at the end of the 2021 Covid Lockdown Period, Craig Tully stood down as the Doune Castle Manager, along with his assistant, Crawford Bell. Everyone associated with The Castle thank Craig and Crawford for their outstanding contribution to the Club during their two-year stint leading the side.

The Castle has been delighted to secure the services of George Ward to succeed Craig. Well-known to everyone inside the Club, George has extensive experience of the Amateur game, having previously been in charge of Callander Thistle and, most recently, Steins Thistle.

Joining George at the Castle helm in 2021-2022 will be his tried and tested coaching team: Kenny Ferguson, Sam McCue and Bob Angus. All 4 have already impressed as they have overseen the resumption of training since early May.

George commented: ‘Living locally, I’m well aware of the tradition and success this great club has enjoyed over so many years. All of the coaching team are equally excited to be part of this club and look forward to doing everything we can to bring further success to Moray Park.

The welcome we have received has been wonderful. The attitude of all of the players has been exceptional. We look forward to what lies ahead, fired by a determination to add to Doune’s illustrious history.’

New Doune Manager Plans Ahead For Non-Contact Training

George Ward has admitted he was taken away by the speed of his appointment as the new Manager of Doune Castle – as his former club Steins Thistle bring in their new boss, writes Tom Scott.

He told me: “Firstly, happy to see that Steins have appointed a Manager who will be bringing fresh players in – hopefully this sees them knock on. It wasn’t a decision we expected to make eight weeks ago, but it was the correct one for the Club.”

“Once we advertised the vacancy for Steins, Doune had seen that I had stepped away , and made contact about my availability and plans for next season. My plans were to get out on my road bike and go to Ibrox as I have a season
M ticket. However, after speaking to Doune and William Docherty, I was keen to take up the role.”

“I am very familiar with the Club and its success over the years. I was made aware of what players were staying on, and who was coming in, so I felt they were in a strong position.”

“I am familiar with the Caledonian League and the beauty is that most of the games next season are Stirling based. Another factor was that I live five minutes away, so it will make a huge difference on my home life.”

“It has all came around very quickly but it is something I couldn’t say no to. We start Non-Contact Training on Monday, 26th April, which gives us 7 weeks to gradually get the guys up to speed before we play our first game in the Stirling Summer League.”

“This will allow us to prepare and plan for the 2021-2022 season.”

Thistle Prepare For Long-Awaited Training Start-Back

Manager David McLean is planning to bring his Callander Thistle squad back for restricted training next weekend, writes Tom Scott.

“Providing everything goes to plan, we should be returning on Saturday (April 10th)”, said David.

Callander Thistle have not kicked a competitive football since they defeated hosts Doune Castle 4-0 back in early October, 2020.

Scorers were Alastair McPherson (2), Alan More (Roger) and Man of the Match Andy Orr.

David added: “That was a great result for us in a local derby. Just a shame we haven’t been able to build on it.”
