Former senior footballer Stephen Docherty has agreed to join the backroom staff of St Joseph’s AFC, writes Tom Scott.
Docco, who clubs include Airdrie and Partick Thistle plus spells in the junior football ranks with Pollok, Bathgate, and Irvine
Meadow, was also capped by Junior Scotland, and coached at that level under Manager Keith Burgess.
He said: “I have never been involved before in Amateur Football, but I know manager Alastair MacColl from the great work he did with the youth set up at Falkirk.”
“I have had a good chat with him, and also met the players briefly via social distancing at a Saturday training session.”
“Alastair has put a great squad together, bring through players from under 21 football, and the average age is 22-23 years.”
“The club is celebrating 50 years and we want to set high standards in the Caledonia League, where they played one game (and won) before lockdown.”
“We should be aiming at trying to win promotion into the Premier Division.”
Docco was helping Stephen Robertson at Yoker Athletic Under 20 Development – they never managed a game due to the pandemic – and he added: “They have teams aged 15,16,17 and 20s. It will come good given time and I wish them every success.”
