Headline Makers Revisited: Douglas AFC (Saturday, May 9, 1970)

Former Queens Park winger John Collins made a sensational return to the National Stadium as Douglas Amateurs defeated Doune Castle 3-1 after Extra Time in the Scottish Amateur Cup Final, writes Tom Scott.

Douglas had disposed of such big-hitters as Gartcosh United, Bannockburn, Dumbarton Academy FP AFC , and Rhu Amateur FC en-route to Glasgow’s South Side.

With an estimated crowd of 8500, Doune Castle went ahead through McPhee.

Stuart Hodge took the game into Extra-Time with an 87th minute equaliser.

John Collins edged the South Lanarkshire team ahead after 104 minutes, and ten minutes later he cleverly finished off a run to complete the 3-1 scoreline.

Central defender Tom Lennox captained the new Scottish Amateur Cup Winners.
