The name of Douglas Amateurs Football Club is only a few months away from returning – this time in the Airdrie and Coatbridge League, writes Tom Scott.
Between the late 1960s until they disbanded – after 12 years – in 1977, Douglas were ranked among the top three Amateur Football Clubs in Scotland – winning just about every available trophy (Championships- Cups).
Much of their success – winning three National Trophy Finals at Hampden Park in 1969-1970, 1971-1972, and 1973-1974 – resulted from being members of the Lanarkshire League, but. having introduced a second team in 1970-1971, Douglas immediately took a grip of the Scottish Amateur League.
Starting in Division 6 through to Division 1, six Championships were secured, plus the 1st Division Cup.
I understand the 2021 Douglas AFC version have had their new kits sponsored by a local company – A&A CAR SPA (Car Wash).
