Buckhaven Boss Opens Idea On Pre-Season Tourney

Buckhaven United AFC James Campbell is ready to explore the possibility of setting-up a Pre-Season Summer Tournament, especially for Amateur Clubs who like his have not kicked a ball in the 2020-2021 campaign, writes Tom Scott.

Fife-based United are hoping to attract interest from other areas- including Dundee, Edinburgh, and Stirling – once restrictions are eased, and the green light is switched on to have football restored.

Revealing his plan of action at Scottish Amateur Football News, James said “After speaking to a few new Amateur Clubs that have started season 2020-2021 and been limited to any football training or games due to the world’s pandemic, I formed the opinion this can’t have been easy for anyone to recruit players, attract sponsorship, and have a stable Pre-Season behind them with the stop -start.”

“I have looked in and you don’t find many Clubs running tournaments, Knock-Out Rounds – wee things like that. It’s all just 90-minute friendly games. When I was coaching with younger groups there were tournaments galore for Clubs to attend, and get game time etc.”

“I am reaching out to Clubs that have just started up in the 2020-2021 season, or this season approaching 2021- 2021 about getting together for a Summer League similar to the Scottish League Cup (League Stage).”

“This is providing that we can get back to football, and travel when current Covid restrictions are lifted. The plan would be not to travel too far, such as a few clubs from Fife, Edinburgh, Lothians, Stirling, Falkirk, and Dundee. I don’t want that to sound that I have missed out areas such as Glasgow and further afield. I am just trying to keep local Clubs close to their respected area.”

“The Plan I have been looking at is 16 teams involved. Two or possibly three Clubs from each of interest. Groups of 4 – Top Two teams advance.”

“Obviously, there would still need to be more details to be sorted such as pitch hire, referee costs, and when to get the games played. Plus, a venue for the Cup Final.”

“This hopefully eliminates when Pre-Season friendlies get set-up and Clubs pull out of the games leaving pitches to be paid for, referees booked and Clubs are left looking to re-arrange another team to play.”

“Of course, we would need the backing from both local football authorities and the Scottish Amateur Football Association, as well as any Clubs who would be interested.”

“I am open to suggestions and ideas.”
