Big Player Interview – Robbie McInnes (Kilbride Thistle AFC Captain)

Kilbride Thistle AFC Manager Sean Kenney has been hugely supportive of the Scottish Amateur Football News concept, and I was delighted when he nominated captain Robbie McInnes for today’s Big Player Interview, Tom Scott.

ROBBIE McINNES…. Kilbride Thistle AFC Captain.

FULL NAME and POSITION (S) PLAYED AT KILBRIDE THISTLE AFC?

“Robbie McInnes. Position: Midfield.”

WHEN DID YOU SIGN FOR KILBRIDE THISTLE AND WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION PLAYING FOR THEM?

“I signed for Kilbride Thistle in January, 2019.”

“I always knew that Kilbride were a top team with lots of good young players, mixed with a few older players , and I knew some of the boys who played for them. I also knew the gaffer from nut-megging him a few times in a game of 5-a-sides that we played against each other a few years before I signed.”

“I remember the night that I agreed to sign was on a night out with big Alex, and he phoned the gaffer telling him that I was interested in signing. When I was asked to sign it was a no brainer.”

“The main attractions of playing for Kilbride is how big a club they are, the attractive football we play, and how well all of the boys get on with each other.”

WON ANY HONOURS? PLEASE DETAIL COMPETITION and YEARS.

“I haven’t won anything yet at Kilbride since I joined, but I have no doubt in my mind that in the near future with the Squad and Management team that we have, we will win some silverware.”

WHAT IS YOUR BEST- EVER MEMORY PLAYING FOR KILBRIDE THISTLE?

“My best- ever memory playing for Kilbride Thistle was against our rivals Ardeer when we won 3-2. I started on the bench so I have still to have a word with the gaffer about that!”

“We went behind early on and managed to bring it back to 2-1, and then they brought it back to 2-2.”

“With 2 minutes to go, we got a corner that was crossed into the box and Bennett scored with one of the last touches of the ball. Scoring a winner last-minute against any team is amazing, but against Ardeer was some buzz.”

WHAT IS THE BEST PRANK/ WIND-UP YOU HAVE WITNESSED AT TRAINING OR PRE-MATCH INVOLVING A PLAYER?

“The best prank that I have witnessed at Kilbride Thistle was on our Player of the Year night that we had in the gaffers’ back garden with a big gazeebo.”

“Everyone had told Chrissy Kay that the dress code was smart with a shirt and tie with trousers on ,and he turned up to Sean’s back garden where everyone was just wearing casual clothes. I’m sure there is a video going about to show how funny it was. He wasn’t impressed.”

GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO THE MANAGEMENT STYLE OF SEAN KENNEY?

“The management style is very good and all of the players buy into the way that he wants us to play.”

“When it comes to games whether it be a league game or a friendly, we give 100%, and play the game like it is a Final. As the gaffer says: “There’s no such thing as a friendly.”

“Sean has got us working on a new way of playing for the season coming, and we are well drilled on the create, maintain and exploit stages, where there are lots of rotations to help certain players get on the ball and play attractive football , which has been working well in training. He is always thinking of ways which we can improve in different areas of the park.”

“I have never played under a Manager who is so committed and loves football as much as he does. The boys give everything on the park for him!”

“We have 3 top coaches as well as Sean, who are very good at setting out different drills for us which helps a lot. Can’t forget wee Jimmy Bell too – he’s some man!”
