Headline Makers Revisited – Amateur Fears Over Backlog (December 2009)

A major improvement in December weather was needed to prevent further fears of a huge backlog in Amateur Football, writes Tom Scott.

Both the Fosters Scottish and West of Scotland Cups had been badly hit, but that did not deter officials going ahead with Fourth Round draws.

The national trophy produced a number of attractive pairings: including Bon Accord City v. Glasgow Harp, Baillieston Thistle v. Cupar Hearts, Benarty (Fife) v. Wellhouse Amateurs, Garrowhill Thistle v. Cumbernauld Clyde or St Mungo and South Camlachie v Hurlford.

In the West Cup, Glasgow University lost their third round clash 3-1 after extra-time against Mossblown and Firhill United crashed out with the same scoreline at Ayr’s Stevenston United.

On the domestic scene, Glasgow North were paired away to Cleland in the first round of the President’s Cup, while Glasgow Wanderers would entertain Southside and Sandymount AFC had Westhill as visitors.
